Waste management and resource recovery

With the landfill nearing capacity, efforts focus on resource recovery and diversion.

Two WasteSorted Infrastructure Grants funded an all weather e-waste drop-off and mechanical sorting of commercial waste, recovering over 28 tonnes of e-waste and 400 tonnes of scrap metal annually. Manual sorting improves safety by intercepting hazardous items like lithium batteries. A seasonal drop-off and reuse area encourages upcycling of furniture and tools, popular among residents.

Free mulch is available through the green waste program. These initiatives reflect Broome’s commitment to sustainability, circular economy principles and long-term cultural change through education and community engagement
