Boronia used a share of the almost $35,000 raised at its 2024 Gala Day to add a new trishaw bike to CWA鈥檚 fleet to take neighbouring elderly SwanCare residents on free outdoor rides.
The collaboration, which sees Boronia residents trained as volunteer trishaw pilots by CWA supervisors, gives elderly passengers a chance to get outdoors and creates valued social interaction for both the seniors and the women preparing to re-enter the community.
鈥淣obody quite does volunteering like Boronia,鈥 one Boronia resident said. 鈥淏efore coming here I鈥檇 never volunteered but it makes you want to do more.
鈥淕iving people an experience they don鈥檛 usually get because they are limited physically, just being given that trust, changes something in us 鈥 it turns us from prisoners into people.鈥
Another Boronia resident, new to the initiative but not volunteering, said the program 鈥 and the exercise and conversation that come with it 鈥 play an important role in rehabilitation.
鈥淚 was familiar with how good it makes you feel,鈥 she said. 鈥淰olunteering is a great way to build your self-esteem because you鈥檙e putting yourself back out there, I feel very lucky.鈥
The program also gives residents something to look forward to beyond their time at Boronia.
鈥淎 lot of women will leave here without a job, so it鈥檚 great to link them to strong supports through volunteering,鈥 Boronia Manager, Family and Community Services, Susan Andrews said.
鈥淚t removes some of the stigma or need to explain where they鈥檙e from because they鈥檙e already part of the program.鈥
鈥淭hey鈥檝e become part of our volunteer family,鈥 Karen O鈥機onnor from Cycling Without Age added. 鈥淭hey feel welcome, safe and connected 鈥 and that they鈥檙e needed, which they are.鈥
The bespoke trishaw, which bears Boronia鈥檚 name, is the first of its kind assembled in WA.
鈥淗aving something we can put out name on now is an absolute privilege,鈥 one resident said. 鈥淭o be able to say, 鈥榃e worked towards that, this is our part in our community鈥, is amazing.鈥
Boronia鈥檚 Gala Day has raised more than $380,000 for various charities since it began in 2005.
